The book of Malachi serves as the final bookend for the Canonical Old Testament. What may have been hoped for as the messianic golden age after exile falls into the same issues as before the exile. God warns against lazy sacrifices, Priests leading people astray, and calls ahead to the Christ, and then 400 years of silence.
